Is leg amputation eligible for Social Security Disability?

I heard that the application process when filling for Social Security Disability is thorough and there are certain medical documentations that are needed to support such request. I have read in the net that the approval for social security disability grant depends on the severity of the case, as to the nature of the disability, if its permanent or temporary. How about leg amputation case, is this a valid ground to apply for a Social Security Disability?
